            Abstract :
A computer-aided design method for energy-optimal positioning DC drive systems is presented. The task of optimal selection of the motor and the motor/load gear ratio is translated into a nonlinear constrained optimization problem and solved graphically for a line of available motors. The maximum load speed and the load/motor gear ratio are the optimized variables, while the constraints represent allowable ranges of motor speed, voltage, and current, as well as the permissible maximum displacement time. Minimum-loss control strategy is assumed to be applied. A software package, computing and displaying a safe operation area and an associated energy-optimal speed profile, developed to facilitate the drive design is presented.<>
