Abstract
Summary form only given. We have demonstrated that CdSe is a promising material for applications in all-optical switching around 1.5 /spl mu/m. The nonlinear refractive index of 1.3/spl times/10/sup -13/ cm/sup 2//W compares favorably to that measured in AlGaAs around and is suitable for a number of nonlinear applications, including the recently demonstrated generation of quadrature-squeezed states of light around 1.5 /spl mu/m in CdSe.
