Abstract
A novel data-acquisition method which can obtain complete data for cone beam SPECT (single photon emission computed tomography) is proposed. One simultaneously rotates the gamma camera and translates the patient bed, so that cone beam projections can be obtained with the focal point traversing a helix surrounding the patient. A reconstruction algorithm for the helical cone beam projections is developed. Implementation of the algorithm requires a rebinning step to convert cone beam data to parallel data. The 3-D Radon inversion is used to reconstruct the image. This algorithm is shown to produce fewer artifacts than the commonly used Feldkamp algorithm
