Abstract
Two methods of vestigial sideband (VSB) realization, the staggered modulation (SM) and cosine modulation (CM), are analyzed. It is shown that if the SM method is used to eliminate the frequency spectral redundancy, the modulation error rate (MER) performance is lower than CM´s. However, the CM scheme is considered to be higher computational complexity. To resolve the existing drawbacks, the improved staggering modulation (ISM) method based on staggered quadrature amplitude modulated (SQAM) is proposed. Utilizing the interpolation filter instead of the time shifting filter, ISM approach simplifies the complexity of modulation without loss of the MER performance.
