Abstract :
In this paper, we used a simple, two-stage erbium amplifier, where both stages are pumped by low-power single-transverse-mode laser diodes. We used standard polarisation-maintaining active fibre with 0.15 NA and 7 μm core diameter (-8.5 μm mode field diameter). The comparably small mode field diameter is compensated by a high erbium concentration (55 dB/m absorption at 1530 nm). In this way, it was possible to use an 80 cm short amplifier stage.
