Scintillating strips+WLS fiber EM shower maximum detectors in the CDF Plug Upgrade

Abstract :
Summary form only. A number of different electromagnetic shower maximum detectors have been tested in the CDF Plug Upgrade program. The performances of a design foreseeing long scintillator strips with a wavelength shifter fiber embedded in them and read-out by a multichannel PMT (photomultiplier tube) were investigated. An x-y detector providing two orthogonal views of an EM (electromagnetic) shower from the same piece of scintillator was also studied. Good position resolution and a π0/γ separation in agreement with the simulation was found. The authors examine the different sources of possible cross-talk among the individual channels and obtained a good agreement with the EGS Monte Carlo results for the EM shower shape
