Abstract :
The performances of the prototypes of a new hadronic calorimeter built with 1-mm-diameter quartz fibers embedded in lead are presented. The use of Cherenkov light produced in quartz fibers offers various advantages: radiation resistance up to 1 Grad, very good timing properties (1 ns time resolution and 5 ns signal width), and good linearity. The two prototypes have been tested at CERN SPS with electrons (10 and 30 GeV) and sulphur (200 GeV/nucleon) beams. The measured resolution was 10.5% on 10 GeV electrons for the first prototype and 7.5% on sulphur for the second one. The agreement between the experimental data and simulation results shows that one can now design the final version of such a detector
