Abstract
Summary form only. A study has been carried out on the properties of lead fluoride (PbF2) as a Cherenkov material for use in electromagnetic calorimetry. A prototype calorimeter module consisting of a 5×5 array of 2.1×2.1×18.5 cm2 crystals has been built and tested in several test beams. The energy resolution, position resolution, and e /π separation at various energies were investigated. The light output in terms of photoelectrons per MeV has been measured, and compared with lead glass. Measurements were also made on radiation damage in PbF2 using 60Co gamma rays and high-energy ionizing particles
