Abstract
ABB Combustion Engineering Nuclear Power has designed a BWR void detection system that relies on the simultaneous sensing of neutron and gamma fluxes. The difference between the two as measured by in-core sensors can be correlated to local void fraction. Knowledge of the local void fraction can be used to optimize real-time power distribution monitoring codes and has potential for detecting local core oscillations. Use of a simultaneous neutron/gamma response can also extend the useful life of the local power range monitor fission chambers and minimize the use of the traveling in-core probe system
