Abstract :
The advent of personal communication systems (PCS) will provide global connectivity over commercial communication networks. Small, inexpensive, low-power terminals that are becoming available support this connectivity, provided that the user is reasonably close to a base station. Similar efforts are underway to provide extended connectivity to military users. The problems here are somewhat different because the communications often need to be end-to-end secure and because there often is no fixed infrastructure (base stations). The paper describes the design of an HF to wireline modem converter that plays the role of a radio-wireline interface (RWI). The RWI acts as a gateway between tactical communications equipment (for example, MINTERM) and strategic (STU III)
