  • Abstract
Summary form only given, as follows. A new type of birdcage coil having a rectangular geometry has been developed for MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) of the hand. This coil was analyzed using validated theoretical models for standard cylindrical birdcages. The effective circuit elements were determined and compared for comparable cylindrical and rectangular birdcage coils, and RF field mapping was performed. The SNR of the rectangular coil was 240% greater than that of a comparable cylindrical version. This was consistent with a reduction of noise due to decreased volume and a 22% greater sensitivity (from the field plots) of the rectangular coil compared to the cylindrical version. High-resolution hand images further demonstrated the utility of this type of coil for MRI
