Abstract
The need for improving the online adjustment of process operating conditions has long been recognised as an important issue of plant operation and management in the chemical process industry. In order to address this need, substantial research into improving existing optimisation algorithms has been performed during the last decade; this has lead to significant improvements in robustness and accuracy. The increased availability of low cost high power computers has improved the feasibility of applying online optimisation; and this, coupled with advances in dynamic modelling techniques, has at last made the technology a practical tool
