  • Abstract
Summary form only given. A study has been conducted to determine the feasibility of using a large-diameter two-cavity klystron as an HPM (high-power microwave) generator. Cavities are closed (not reentrant), and designed to oscillate in the TM/sub 020/ mode at a frequency of 1.3 GHz. The nonresonant, coaxial drift regions are also closed; the beam is transported through the system by foil focusing; the large diameter of the device enables the use of a high power, low-current-density annular beam, which is necessary for screen survival and long pulses. Beam parameters of interest are current /spl ap/ 2-4 kA, voltage /spl ap/ 150-200 kV, average radius /spl ap/ 14.5 cm, and thickness /spl ap/ 3 cm. A performance metric is 100 J of radiated microwave energy per beam pulse. Theoretical results concerning beam transport, modulation, and RF conversion have been obtained.
