  • Abstract
We present a model explaining the physical origin of surface modes in hollow core photonic bandgap fibres. We discuss the existence of two families of surface modes, strut and rod localised, and propose practical rules to avoid them both. Based on this understanding, we propose a novel realistic design for large core, surface mode free fibres.
