  • Abstract
Public Switched Telephone network (PSTN) is the strongest means of voice communication and shows the highest performance characteristics. In this paper the potential of Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) for future generations and the methods to improve its performance are discussed. As the internet has grown rapidly it has given a wide range of choices in the selection of a carrier to set up a VoIP call. Undoubtedly the route of the call and hence the choice of the carrier is the most important factor that affects the operation of VoIP calls to other IP networks or PSTN and mobile phones. In order to improve the performance characteristics of the calls to be set up, the use of Service Provider (SP) clouds and dynamic adaptive voice routing is suggested. Based on failure fraction, R factor, Carrier Success Ratio (CSR) and cost, the call could be routed through Least Cost Route (LCR) or a High Quality Route (HQR) based upon the subscription of the user. Using Answer Seizure Ratio (ASR) servers and routing sheets and logs, VoIP calls can be improved in terms of quality and performance. By the use of the techniques mentioned, the theoretical model shows the VoIP performance approaching that of the PSTN. The result shows that the method of evaluating carrier performance with the designed CSR parameter is better than the methods used at present.
