Abstract :
With the rapid development of the High Speed Internet, broadband network operators and Internet Service Providers are about to focus on the demand and trends of network infrastructure and devices. Both of them are interested in the current running state of the broadband network and subscribers´ activities. This paper presents the network traffic characterization analysis and studying. We captured the network traffic data, parsed them and brought forth the analysis. In the study, we have developed a series of Matlab™ scripts in order to fulfill the requirements of broadband traffic analysis. By using the scripts, we have given out the network traffic characteristics on network-perspective as well as subscriber-perspective. By analyzing the approximately 5.5 megabytes of captured network traffic data, we´ve got the detailed view of the network traffic state. We figure out that Peer-to-Peer traffic is dominant in total network traffic, the uploaded bytes are more than the downloaded bytes, etc. These findings are very valuable for the network service providers to control the network and make it more effectively and efficiently.
