            Abstract :
Technological and scientific perspectives include fiber compatible near infrared sources (diode pumped solid state lasers) for materials processing, end-pumped slab-Nd:YAG systems up to 300 W of power and disk lasers with powers in the kW-level, high power diode lasers for application areas like soldering and heat management/hardening, light sources of 13.5 nm wavelength at 5-10 kHz and 3-10 mJ pulse energy for EUV lithography. A brief review of political and scientific action, funding instruments and programs is also presented.
