Abstract
Telecommunication systems which operate at frequencies in the Ka and Q/V bands have to cope with extremely strong tropospheric propagation impairments, mainly caused by rain, which require the application of fade mitigation techniques (FMTs) in order to guarantee the desired system availability. This paper presents MultiEXCELL, a new global model for the generation of realistic synthetic rain fields, particularly suitable for the analysis of issues related to the radio propagation in the atmosphere. The potentialities of the MultiEXCELL model are illustrated by simulating a two-station site diversity telecommunication system and by evaluating the advantages deriving from the implementation of such a fade mitigation technique.
