Abstract
Vector quantization (VQ) techniques play an important role in multimedia compression application. In this paper, a fast codebook generation algorithm based on orthogonal multiple split initialization method is proposed to reduce the computational cost in the codebook design procedure. The method splits one code word into multiple new code words adaptively with code word compensation strategy and the increment of new code words is set to be orthogonal, aiming at reducing the iterations of the following clustering. The proposed algorithm is applied to generate codebooks of Linear spectrum frequency(LSF) parameter, which are used in low bit rate speech coding. Experiment show that the proposed method can provide 24.8% computational time reduction for designing codebook in size of 1024 with almost equal VQ performance compared to the binary split LBG algorithm.
