Neural Network Templates and Their Interpretation

The wide applicability of neural networks poses an interesting challenge for the philosophy of science. This paper argues that when used for explanatory purposes, the interpretation of the neural network´s computational template is crucial. The dynamics of debate about the interpretation of a model are illustrated with examples from the recent history of the neurocognitive sciences.
