Abstract :
A transmission performance study is carried out for a multi-hop inter-city optical ring network with short-period dispersion managed fiber (SPDMF) taking into consideration the effect of cross-phase modulation cross-talk introduced at each node. The performance results evaluated at a bit rate of 10 Gb/s show that the bit error rate (BER) performance is limited severely by the cross-phase modulation. For a given BER of 10-9 the number of hops is limited to 7 with a probe power of -5 dBm, pump power of -15 dBm. Computations are also carried out to find the optimum bandwidth of the Fabry-Perot filter (FPF). At a given BER of 10-9, the maximum number of hops that can be traversed is 17 corresponding to an optical FPF bandwidth of two times bit rate
