Abstract
The 1996 Hewlett-Packard self-assessment procedure for product stewardship was established to help HP businesses advance their product stewardship programs. This was a two-step process that required each business to first, evaluate the significance of product stewardship for the entity´s business; and second, develop an action plan to meet the entity´s current and emerging business needs in this area. To accomplish this task, the procedure was developed and implemented with a set of guiding principles aimed to maximize effectiveness for a diverse set of businesses, and allow flexibility in the procedures implementation to assure that the benefits provided value in each unique entity´s needs. This paper documents the application of this procedure at two different HP entities, and the results and action plan these entities identified to improve their product stewardship programs
