Abstract
Operating systems (OS) are now widely used in embedded system design; they can have a significant impact on the energy consumption of the embedded systems. This paper proposes a methodology for energy characterization and estimation of embedded operating system services. The Architecture Analysis and Design Language (AADL) is integrated in the design flow. The approach revolves around three focal concepts: modeling using the AADL language, parsing the AADL model to be recognized by the simulator used and to estimate the energy and power overhead of the embedded OS. The OS service studied is the inter-process communication.
