Abstract :
The European Union ROTIS project ( remotely operated tanker inspection system) deals with the design, development and testing of a novel remotely operated vehicle to be used for the inspection of oil tanker ballast tanks. The MMI realized for control and supervision of the ROV is described. The peculiarity of the particular application proposed some issues, especially with regard to the orientation of a remote operator inside typical ballast tank structures; such issues led to original graphical solutions that are described. All the MMI software has been developed in Java, making heavy use of object oriented programming techniques
