Abstract :
This paper describes the concept and design study results for the double-cusp gyro-gun (DCG), a candidate beam-forming system for the second generation of gyro-amplifiers. Self-consistent beam optics simulations, performed via the combined use of MAGIC and POISSON, confirm the capability of the DCG to operate as a flexible and high-quality beam forming system for both large- and small-orbit devices as well as linear beam devices. In addition, the DCG configuration provides for the independent control of the velocity ratio ( alpha ), guiding center radius (r/sub g/), and velocity spread. Most importantly, this flexibility has been achieved via proper adjustments of the magnetic field profile using the same gun mechanical design. This makes the gun quite flexible, forgiving, and suitable to a very wide range of gyro-devices and linear beam devices.<>
