Abstract :
An automatic inspection system for detecting surface defects in flat-rolled aluminium strip is described. The system inspects 100% of the top and bottom surface and incorporates powerful real-time defect classification capabilities. It provides significant operator assistance by displaying defect-triggered grey-scale images of the web surface during processing. The system, although fully automatic, is primarily for operator assistance. It supports the line operators in their final assessment of aluminium sheet surface quality. In addition, the system generates coil reports, which are loaded into a plantwide database. Basic system design and some operating features are discussed.<>
