Abstract :
The Naval Oceanographic Office (NAVO-CEANO) has utilized trawl-resistant bottom mounts (TRBMs) of various configurations since 1992. Deployment weight of some initial packages was 2,850 pounds confined within a 13.5-feet length, truncated pyramid design. Since 1998, cone-shaped units of 375 pounds and 7 feet in diameter have been more frequently utilized. Design of the earlier TRBMs was based on optimal trawl resistance and the available doppler current profiler technology. Acquiring current measurements to support hydrography with those packages was limited due to specialized deployment equipment and space required on the hydrographic vessels. The solution was to design a miniaturized TRBM, utilizing the RD Instruments Workhorse Monitor Acoustic Doppler Current Profiler (WHM-ADCP) and a separate battery pack lying sideways. Initially, the miniaturized TRBM will be used to acquire current measurements to meet International Hydrographic Organization (IHO) Class A standards aboard the hydrographic ships USNS JOHN MCDONNELL (T-AGS 51) and USNS LITTLEHALES (T-AGS 52)
