Abstract :
Thematic maps of acoustic diversity resulting from acoustical seabed classification surveys are usually presented as track lines of color-coded classes. These classes can later be calibrated using a bottom sampling system and, perhaps, underwater video or biological sampling. Some benthic species such as prawns, clams, scallops, crabs, rockfish, etc. are keyed to particular seabed geomorphology. Mapping these unique habitats supplements traditional stock assessment methods, where range and extent of preferred environment is often directly correlated to population. Measurement of habitat extent improves estimates of these benthic stocks by relating test catch density to habitat area. The Canadian Hydrographic Service and the Shellfish & Marine Mammals Assessment Group, both within the federal government department of Fisheries and Oceans Canada, have conducted an integrated acoustic seabed classification and prawn bottom trawl survey. This program investigates correlations of prawn distributions with seabed type. Results are presented demonstrating the effectiveness of acoustic seabed classification for mapping benthic habitat
