Abstract
Summary form only given. The optical response function of dense matter is not trivially connected to the electromagnetic properties of the constituent particles because it is a many-body problem. More than a century ago an important contribution was made in making this connection by Lorentz when he introduced the concept of a local field resulting in the well-known Lorentz-Lorenz relation between the dielectric coefficient of the material and the polarizability of the constituents.
