Abstract
Any artificial system is designed, built and used for a purpose. As the systems engineering methodologies evolve, so do the knowledge representation standards and tools, required for systems modeling. Yet, most of these standards do not provide meaningful ways to describe or to suggest what is the purpose of the described system and how that purpose is fulfilled. The ideas presented in the paper are the result of many years of systematic refinement of measurement and control systems development methodologies, currently applied by Holotron in Romania. Our conclusion is that the key to a more complete and efficient way to describe systems is to expose and to emphasize the purpose-mean paradigm. This engineering approach can be successfully applied to most types of concrete systems
