Abstract
We describe the idea of a possibilistic variable and introduce the problem of obtaining an equivalent value for a possibilistic variable. This value is seen as being analogous to the expected value in probability theory. A number of properties required of the equivalent value are describe. Two approaches for obtaining the equivalent value for a possibilistic variable are introduced. These approaches are then synthesized to yield a generalized approach for obtaining a possibilistic equivalent value. A novel aspect of this approach is that it is parametrized by a weak ordering. We discuss the effect of the parametrizing weak ordering on the process used to calculate the possibilistic equivalent value
