Abstract
Mechanical properties of lung are closely related to lung diseases. However, currently there are no noninvasive methods that can measure the local lung tissue mechanical properties. In this paper, a technique that involves tracking the surface wave propagation and using ultrasound images to guide the measurements is introduced. The proposed method is tested on a human subject at both functional residual capacity (FRC) and total lung volume (TLV) conditions. The results show that the surface wave speed at 200 Hz is 4.31 m/s and 7.43 m/s at FRC and TLV, respectively. The proposed method has a clinical potential for quantifying the lung regional stiffness noninvasively.
