Abstract :
Ethernet-based passive optical network (E-PON) is one of the most promising technology choices for next generation broadband access services, In this paper, we propose a novel media access control (MAC) protocol based on distributed control to enable EPON to provide quality-of-service (QoS) support for various traffic types. This protocol eliminates the process of MAC control messages, which simplifies the network control mechanism. Simulation results show that our proposed scheme outperforms the conventional carrier-sense multiple access with collision detection (CSMA/CD) MAC protocol in terms of packet delay for high priority (HP) traffic. In addition, the proposed scheme has smaller packet delay and larger saturation throughput for low priority (LP) traffic than the fixed time division multiple access (TDMA) scheme and the conventional CSMA/CD scheme
