Abstract :
A complete Engineering program leading to a BSc degree in Computer Engineering is running now as a distance learning program in the little town of Pajala in the most northern part of Sweden. Pajala is situated north of the Arctic Circle, about 500 km north of Umea. Thirty-five students joined the program. Each student has his own desk with PC and other standard laboratory equipment. Teaching is mainly run from Umea through lectures via video studio in addition to direct computer communications. The program, running since January 1997, is looked at as a successful pilot experiment since other remote cities are striving to launch similar programs.
