Abstract :
Mode-locked pulses from a novel laser structure are studied in order to investigate the effect of the length of the absorber section on pulse width. A travelling-wave model is used to predict an optimum absorber length of 100 μm for a total device length of 1 mm. Experimental results demonstrate the shortening of pulses for absorber lengths of 50 μm and 75 μm as compared to the case without an absorber, but mode-locked operation of lasers with longer absorber lengths is not achieved.
