  • Abstract
This paper describes a method to calculate iron losses of rotating machines with the consideration of the skin effect and excess loss in the electrical steel sheets applied to the stator and rotor cores. The 3-D finite element analysis is carried out to calculate the eddy current loss of the core with the consideration of the skin effect along the axial direction within the electrical steel sheet. The effect of the grains in the electrical steel sheet is estimated by modifying the eddy current loss with the coefficient determined by the experimental characteristics of the steel sheet. The hysteresis loss is also calculated with the consideration of the skin effect. It is clarified that the proposed method is valid for various kinds of electrical steel sheets
