Abstract
The magnetic hard disk drive (HDD) has become the most important form of data storage. This paper discusses an alternative storage approach using scanning probe techniques (SPT) and a polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) storage medium. Five parameters are important for a data storage system: areal density, data rate, access time, error rate, and reliability. Research results indicate that SPT-based storage systems could compete with HDD technology in these areas especially in the emerging field of small-form-factor devices for mobile applications.
