  • Abstract
In order to determine the performance of wireless data transmission at high data rates, consideration of channel transmission characteristics, intersymbol interference reduction (equalization) channel coding is necessary. The combination of a modem combating intersymbol interference by means of decision feedback equalization and reducing the bit error probability by a combination of convolutional and Reed-Solomon decoding and a finite-buffer ARQ protocol is discussed. It is shown that the effect of the modem on the performance of the ARQ protocol can be determined quantitatively by identifying the packet error sequence as a Markov process. Furthermore, the burstiness of the resulting error sequence is shown to have a limited impact on the protocol performance in terms of throughput and delay jitter
