Abstract :
A new approach to the design and construction of phased array antennas has been developed which utilizes a device called a "Variphase Coupler". This device provides variable-phase coupling to a waveguide-type radiator from an integral waveguide feed, by means of diode-controlled waveguide slots. The principal advantage of this approach is that it combines the functions of distribution, phase shifting, and radiation in a highly modular compact structure at low cost. A description of the coupling mechanism will be presented in addition to test data for a small linear array.
