Abstract :
Summary form only given. Since 1995, the Academy for Excellence in Engineering Education (USA) has implemented the Teaching College program for engineering faculty to meet and learn about the scholarship of teaching. At the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, as at many large research universities, engineering educators have learned to teach "on the job" without the benefit of formal training. Many educators receive little information about teaching and, having been exposed to limited teaching models themselves, develop teaching styles within the confines of their own disciplines. Most settle into stable patterns after a few years in the classroom. The authors detail how the College of Engineering has overcome some of these obstacles by encouraging new engineering faculty to participate in the Teaching College.
