Abstract
In general, the location of wind farms is defined by the expected annual energy production. The result is a concentration of wind farms in areas with high average wind speeds. While this goal is totally valid, in certain circumstances may produce an unfavorable effect on power systems due to the large fluctuations of the total wind energy production. However, the wind generation variability can be reduced by the compensation effect of wind farms installed in remote areas with very different wind patterns. In this paper, the compensation effect of wind farm locations is evaluated for the Argentinean electrical system. Specifically, the variability of wind production aggregation is minimized, optimizing the power location of eight wind farms in the state of Chubut.
