Abstract
The improvement of startup transient performance of three-phase wound-rotor induction motors by using chopper-controlled resistance in the rotor circuit was investigated. By properly controlling the dirty cycle of the chopper to adjust the equivalent rotor resistance, higher output torque with lower starting current can be obtained. To control the startup performance under several load conditions and system requirements, maximum torque operation and limited-current operation were considered. The transient current, speed, and torque of the induction motors were investigated by computer simulation, and numerical results were verified by experimental tests.<>
