Abstract :
A distributed power generation system (DPGS) consists of a number of small-scale power generation sources (SSPGS) that provide electric power at a site closer to the user than the central power generation station. Small-scale power generation technologies currently available include wind turbines, fuel cells, micro gas/diesel turbines, small hydro generators and photovoltaic panels. Currently, most SSPGSs are locally controlled and optimized without any consideration for the large area requirements. Therefore, in order to achieve the full potential of a distributed power system, the individual power generators that form the grid-connected distributed network need to be effectively integrated as a whole. A cost effective and deployable communications system is required to provide data links between the remote power generators and the central station. This paper will discuss current data communication technologies that could be used to formulate this distributed power generation communication system.
