Abstract :
An investigation of the rectangular anisotropic optical waveguide modal characteristics is presented. The inhomogeneous structure considered includes a metallic layer required in several integrated optics devices. The phase constant and the attenuation coefficient values of the EX pq and EY pq hybrid propagating modes have been determined by the effective dielectric constant method and the eigenvalue equation defining the complex equivalent refractive index of the involved partially reflecting metal cladded slab TE and TM guided modes has been optimized by the modified razor search by starting from the lossless approximation initial values in order to considerably reduce the C.P.U. computer time. The mode index of the complex solution slightly differs (10¿6) from the lossless approximated one while the changes in respect to the waveguide without metal are of the order of 10¿3. Finally, a few wave function profiles are reported.
