Abstract :
This paper describes a miniature transceiver which consists of three main sections: 1) a receiver portion with three active mixers, thick film limiter, and modem; 2) a transmitter portion with three active upconverters and a gated power amplifier; and 3) a local oscillator section containing a temperature compensated crystal oscillator which is shared by both transmitter and receiver. Design techniques to minimize current drain include active mixers and gated functions. Absolute frequency stability is provided by the interrogator´s own frequency accuracy. Construction employs two Epsilam-10* boards sandwiching a Teflon** fiberglass voltage distribution layer. Use of these construction techniques alleviates the need for conventional high-cost cavity construction.
