Abstract
With the demand of dual-band operation in modern wireless communications, this paper proposes a low profile switched-beam patch antenna. It is a patch antenna that operates at 2.45 GHz and 5.8 GHz by designing microstrip transmission lines to short the low frequency patch with the high frequency patch for low-band operation. These transmission lines open circuit to separate the two patches to allow the high frequency patch operate solely. By selecting appropriate transmission line width and length, the antenna provides switched-beam patterns at the design frequencies. This antenna is significant in developing a low profile dual-band phase array of switched-beam elements.
