Abstract
Router virtualization allows multiple virtual router instances to run on the same physical platform. And high performance and flexible deployment are the main challenges for the design of virtual router. In this paper, we firstly analyze, discuss and illustrate the features and limitations of virtual router models that were proposed by many research communities for the support of virtual networks. Then, we put forward a general model for the data plan of virtual router which not only provides a Modules Database that can easily develop virtual routers to fulfill the requirement of service provider, but also has a similar kernel providing a series of standard APIs that can provide a good programming environment for software programmers who even know nothing of the underlying physical platform. Furthermore, we also analyze the challenges encountered and discuss the next works in the future.
