Abstract
In this paper asymptotic computation in intermode decision as a function of the quantization parameters (QPs) is defined and statistically calculated. The computation cost in several mode decision algorithms, is investigated and compared with the asymptotic computation. The experimental results reveal that the investigated algorithms are only suitable for high bit rate coding. To reduce the computation cost and maintain coding performance in low bit rate coding, a zero-block detection algorithm is proposed. The result indicates that the proposed algorithm is more suitable for low bit rate coding.
