Abstract :
The paper studies the delay-jitter performance of MPEG2 video transmitted over a connection oriented internetwork consisting of various possible mixes of IP and ATM switches. It is shown that all-IP switching outperforms all-ATM switching when the network load is high, and vice versa at low network load. Mixed IP and ATM switching is shown to perform between these two cases. Several methods of mapping IP traffic descriptors to the ATM counterparts are assessed. When used by every ATM connection, the worst case mapping (A. Birman et al.) performs worse than other mapping methods-such as the Uniform mapping (M.W. Garrett and M. Borden). The Native ATM (i.e., null IP layer) is shown to perform very closely to IP-over-ATM insofar as packet delay-jitter is concerned. However, the buffer size requirement of the Native ATM is considerably less
