Abstract :
The Wigner distribution (WD) of multicomponent signals and signals contaminated by additive noise is degraded severely by cross-terms or artifacts that arise due to the bilinear nature of the WD. An artifact reduction method is presented. It is shown through simulation results which compare the standard discrete-WD with the modified discrete-WD that it is usually possible to achieve significant noise reduction using the proposed simple and robust technique, while still maintaining high time-frequency resolution characteristic of the WD
